Pre-woven cane, also known as groove type cane or machine cane, costs $5 per inch across the widest seat or back of the chair. Measure across the widest part of the seat or the back of the chair (outside edge to outside edge) to determine the number of inches. Most dining room chairs are about 17 inches times $5 which would be $85 total.
Open-weave or hand-woven caning is $2.00 per hole. To estimate the cost of this type of caning, count the number of drilled holes around the edge of the seat or back multiplied by $2.00 per hole.
The rush material comes in a spool of 40 lbs. As I use this material, which resembles twisted paper, I weave this onto the chair rungs into the pattern below. Rush seating costs $5 per inch across the widest place of the seat. Most chairs are about 17 inches times $5 which would be $85. Chairs with rush seating need a protective covering like orange shellac. This is brushed on for $5 per chair.
The old timers made splints out of white oak material and wove these into chair bottoms. This same type of product was used to make baskets. The product used today in chairs is a rattan product that resembles the oak splints. We cane chairs with this material at $5 per inch across the widest part of the seat or back.
The cane product is a 6-8 mm binding cane. All cane comes from the orient and is a natural product that grows. It is harvested and placed in bundles that I call hanks. This product is also priced $4 an inch across the widest seat or back of the chair. Please know that the cane color changes with time. Most porch rockers are 20 inches across the seat and as much as 24 inches from top to bottom on the back of the rocker.
If furniture is painted, add 50 percent to the cost.
